IOMFGBC (LBIOM) Bowlers to Compete in Australia & New Zealand

Four bowlers from the IOMFGBC are currently undergoing intensive training regimes in preparation for them to respectively represent the Isle of Man in forthcoming international competitions in Australia and New Zealand in November and December.

Following a successful campaign at the Atlantic Championships in December 2015 for the ladies triples, former Isle of Man pairs champions Pam Makin and Win Kewley will be joined by Anne Watterson, who was part of the ladies triumph in Cyprus last December, will travel to Christchurch, New Zealand to play in the 2016 World Championships. Meanwhile, Clive McGreal will head to the Helensvale Club at the Gold Coast, Australia to compete with the ‘best of the best’ in the World Singles Champion of Champions competition.

Clive, who will compete first, will represent the Island at a tenth World Bowls event since joining the Flat Green Association in 2011 and will have played over 100 international matches for the Island by the end of the tournament. Clive first played bowls competitively over 40 years ago in his native homeland of Wales, but hadn’t played regularly since the late 1980’s until joining the Isle of Man Flat Green Bowling Club nearly six years ago. In that time, Clive has enjoyed much success domestically and internationally. Clive has won three singles league titles, three pairs league titles, five national pairs championships and two national singles championships. His success internationally has come from playing in a couple of European Championships, International Dutch Opens, 3 World Cup Singles and the Atlantic Championships last year where he and his pairs partner, Mark, narrowly missed out on the chance to also compete at the World Championships on shot difference! Clive is drawn in a tough section at the Champion of Champions event alongside host nation favourite Scott Thulborn and class competition from Wales, USA and Hong Kong to name but a few. It will be a real challenge on the Lightning fast greens of the Gold Coast for Clive to finish in the top half of some 24 nations all of which have much larger membership than the Isle of Man with Australia topping the list with over 250,000 bowlers!

As for the ladies Pam has played the game for four years and has shown a natural talent for the sport. Pam has quickly become one of the Island’s top rated ladies, winning two pairs championships with Win Kewley and also being the 2015 ladies singles champion. The World Championship will be Pam’s third outing as an Island international, her first south of the equator.

Win is the most experienced internationally out of the selected ladies. Win has played bowls for five years, in which she has won three ladies pairs championships, and is playing in her 5th World Bowls event and is approaching 50 caps for the Island having competed in the 2014 Dutch Open, two European Championships and the 2015 Atlantic Championship.

Anne, initially a crown green bowler, now dual code, took up flat green bowling a little over two years ago, and in that short space of time has become highly rated demonstrating her raw talent by having become the Island’s ladies champion in just her first season in 2014. Anne regularly travels to Cyprus with her husband Phillip, to play both social bowls and international competition against members of the Cypriot national squad. Her experience on a variety of fast paced greens in warm climate will be invaluable to the team. Anne has previously represented the Island on just one occasion in the internationally recognised flat green form of the game, at the Atlantic Championships, and she will undoubtedly look to draw everything she can from being a part of that successful triples side to perform well in New Zealand.

Prior to their departure to the southern hemisphere, the representatives have been practising intensely in the newly refurbished indoor facility and have also travelled to Cyprus to experience some stiff competition to prepare themselves and get acquainted with surfaces similar to what they expect to compete on in the next couple of months.

Everyone at the Club extends their best wishes to our bowlers down under for every success at the forthcoming events.

Isle of Man - Cyprus Test Challenge Matches

October and November is always a good period to visit Cyprus with its climate ideal at this time of year for lawn bowls. After a busy domestic season and with some members looking for extra preparation for the forthcoming World Bowls events in the Autumn we saw an ever increasing Manx contingent visiting Paphos for a mixture of international and social competition against the Cypriot bowlers. “Bowls Cyprus” has been very proactive and accommodating in scheduling a series of matches from members of their national squad aiding their own international preparations for the World Championships and Champion of Champions tournaments in New Zealand and Australia later this winter at which the Island is also represented.

The Isle of Man – Cyprus challenge series began with a 5 match mini test series of international singles matches with Clive McGreal and Bernice McGreal, both reigning singles champions of IOM, pitted against the elite of the Cypriot national squad. Clive was successful in winning his series by 3 matches to 2 with victories over Michael Jarvis, Tom Owen and Tony Downs whilst just losing out to Terry Austin and Loukas Paraskeva on tie breaks. Bernice did not perform so well in the early matches against the top lady bowlers losing the first 2 of her matches however, to her credit she persevered throughout the week and claimed a fine win over Norma Redfern after another extremely close contest in her final match against Diane Roberts, the Cyprus Ladies Champion of 2015 & 2016 who will be representing the hosts at the Champion of Champions event in Helensvale. Bernice just lost out on this occasion and finished up with just 1 win and 4 defeats from her 5 match series. The official signed scorecards from these matches are available for scrutiny here.

Bernice and Clive also played 5 mixed pairs matches against members of the squad winning 4 of those encounters and just losing out in the final match by a single shot.

Other Manx bowlers making the trek were Win and John Kewley who competed in a couple of mixed pairs fixtures and despite losing both encounters gave a very good account of themselves especially John in his first full season.

Anne and Phil Watterson, by now quite seasoned veterans at the Athena Beach complex, played 3 mixed pairs matches narrowly losing out on 2 occasions and managing a creditable draw in the other match despite not having taken their own woods with them on this trip. Marcia and Alan Pearson on the other hand making their first trip to Cyprus for a bowls match gave a noteworthy display enjoying a fine victory in their only match against local opposition which bodes very well for their future outings.

The Association is now looking forward to their next visit to Cyprus in March 2017 when the Manx bowlers compete in the Four Nation test series to be hosted at the Aliathon Complex in Paphos.

Lloyds Bank Visit IOMFGBC (LBIOM)

Following a very enjoyable and successful visit the previous day, on Friday 16th September the IOMFGBC hosted staff from Lloyd Bank in a 'come and try' session. The group were shown the basics of the game over some trial ends before being split into pairs and competing in a mini round robin, where the 'Lloyds Bank Trophy' was up for grabs. It was great to see some of the group pick up the game quickly and display some talent. Games were played over a short and shart 4 ends, and two of the teams showed real competitive spirit. It was very apt that these two teams would meet each other in the last match of the evening, leaving it unknown who would become the eventual winners. The group expressed a desire to repeat the experience and perhaps the club may even gain some new members for next season

Island Cruise Liner Visitor Experience Lawn Bowls

On Thursday 15th September a group of 20 American passengers from Grand Circle Cruise line paid a visit to IOMFGBC during their stop on the Isle of Man. Their Cruise Director Philip organises visits to places where they can learn new skills and flat green bowling was certainly a new concept for them! After a brief introduction by Win on history of bowls and Clive's instruction to the group on the basics of the game, club members split the visitors into small groups each playing several ends. The visitors expressed how much they had enjoyed the afternoon, and the Cruise Director expressed an interest in repeating the activity next year with other cruisers.

The Isle of Man Flat Green Bowling Club welcome any visitors to the Island who would like to have a casual roll up, a group introductory session or would like to join in one of the club's competitions. Island National Championships 2016 Results

The 2016 Isle of Man National and IOMFGBC Championship finals were somewhat hit by some unexpected severe weather fronts which made the green unplayable. The season as a whole was unhindered by adverse conditions and it was feared that this year's championships would be fated to not go ahead following an initial postponement to the singles fixtures due to huge down pours of rain, and then another storm the night before the rescheduled date, making the green not fit for use. However, following a blissful day on Saturday 3rd September for the pairs fixtures, the singles were finally played the following weekend.

2016 Island National Lawn Bowls Championship Finals

The Isle of Man's national bowls championships are set to be hosted on the weekend, with both men's and ladies singles finals being played on Saturday 3rd of September, and the respective pairs finals on Sunday 4th of September.

The men's singles will be fought out between Clive McGreal, who has only been beaten once this whole season, and Phil Watterson, who himself has shown some fine form seeing off the bookies favourites along the way, including the only person to have beaten Clive this year. Whilst the ladies competition will be contested between former champion and last year's runner up Bernice McGreal and club newcomer Marcia Pearson. Bernice has come through more rounds against tough competition, and so should be well prepared. Marcia herself is an experienced bowler however and it is anticipated that both these matches will be full of skill and drama if championships of recent years are anything to go by.

Sunday 4th of September will see the four best pairs go head to head. In the men's championship Clive McGreal will feature again and play against Phil Watterson in what could be a match to settle the scores. Clive McGreal will play along side son Mark in what has proven to be an unbeatable team so far this season with only two league matches still to play. Although it looks like their positions will change from what they have played for the majority of the year with Mark taking the lead with Clive skipping. Phil Watterson will be joined by Gary Lee who himself managed to reach this year's semi final stage in the singles. The ladies pairs should be an exciting match with Bernice McGreal playing alongside another club newcommer who she narrowly beat in the semi final of the singles, Charlotte Dutton. Charlotte has quickly picked up the game, showing excellent technique and quality shot play in the three months she has been playing. Charlotte made partner Bernice work hard for her singles victory as at one point Charlotte was leading 13-2. Bernice and Charlotte will play against the well established pairing of Pam Makin and Win Kewley who are looking to retain the ladies championship trophy for another successive year. Pam and Win will be looking not only for this to be a triumph, but a good performance as they build towards representing the Isle of Man later this year in the World Championships.

The weekend in all aspects is set to be an exciting prospect. All visitors are welcome to the club to watch and club members will be there to offer some hospitality. Matches on both days start from 13:30.

First Win For Atkinson & Reed

On Saturday the rescheduled Bill Moultrie Pairs Competition was held. Pairs are randomly selected on the day which added to the atmosphere as players did not know their who their partners were until shortly before the competition started. There was a great turn out from the club's members. The teams were divided into 2 sections playing 5 matches each over 4 ends. In this keenly contested competition the winners of Group A with three wins and a draw were Mark McGreal and club newcommer Fred Adlem. The winners of Group B with 4 wins were Martin Atkinson and Barbara Reed. Both teams having displayed some excellent bowling throughout the afternoon it looked set to be a great final. The club members were certainly not disappointed as the final proved to be a very close match with all four players producing some fine bowls. However, it was never going to be an easy match for either side, and as anticipated it came down to the last bowl of the last end to decide the winners. Fred had two bowls well positioned close to the jack at the change over. Barbara Reed's bowl was then lying shot following it being expertly promoted by partner Martin, but Martin was unable to further capitalise on this, and despite a two great shots from Mark in attempt to snatch victory, they both ran past agonisingly close to turning it over. The honours and trophy were claimed by Barbara and Martin. Congratulations are in order for all four who produced some excellent bowls which were greatly appreciated by the club members.

The next Club competition will be the Onchan District Triples on Saturday 6th August. The entry form in the clubhouse for members to sign up.

Club Tour of Scotland

Thursday 23rd June 2016 saw the Isle of Man Flat Green Bowling Club leave the Island on the morning boat to Heysham before travelling north to Falkirk to start their tour of Scotland for the second successive year. 13 club members travelled from the rock to enjoy some healthy competition and social antics, playing teams from Denny, Polmont and Grahamston which resulted in wins from two out of the three sets of matches.

On the Sunday the club entered seven pairs into the John O'Connor open pairs competition at Camelon Bowling Club. At total of 42 pairs from various clubs entered the competition, and the Isle of Man team performed extremely well recording several more wins and drawn than losses. The high point of the competition for our team being Phil Smith and Marcia Pearson reaching the quarter final stage, only losing by a single shot after a sudden death extra end.

Another highlight of the tour was a visit to the Kelvingrove Lawn Bowls Centre where members had the chance to play bowls on the Commonwealth Games greens.

Maddocks & McGreal Claim Ramsey Pairs Trophy

Defending the Ramsey pairs trophy Club President, Eric Maddocks, won last season with Daryl Gribbin the draw for this year’s competition saw Eric partnered with club champion Clive McGreal. During the early round of pool matches Eric and Clive did not have things all their own way with two of the successful Atlantic Triples team Anne Watterson and Karen Slack showing they have developed immensely from their international experiences. They led by 2 shots going into the last end and with Anne holding shot and with just one bowl left they looked confident of a victory however Clive’s last wood pushed out the shot bowl sufficiently to claim 2 shots and earn a draw as a result. In the same pool Bernice McGreal playing alongside newcomer Janice …..? played some fine bowls beating both the Watterson/Slack pairing and the Gary Lee duo before losing out to Maddocks and McGreal in the crucial match allowing them to progress to the final. In the other pool Phil Watterson and partner Marilyn Legg looked imperious in their matches playing with such confidence they swept past the pairings of Win Kewley/Mel Reed, Barbara Reed/Michael Moyer and Marcia Pearson/Hamish Campbell with some comfortable margins. The other matches within that pool saw the honours even out with each pair notching up a win to take some consolation from the afternoon.

With the humidity having eased a little from the earlier part of the day the final produced some excellent bowls from both pairs with Legg especially in fine form giving her partner great support. However, it was the greater consistency from the Maddocks/McGreal pairing which just edged the result in a close contest to win the final by a margin of just 3 shots.

With the summer holidays just around the corner if anyone wishes to come and give the game a try please contact Win Kewley on 499714, introductory qualified coaching and bowls available free of charge.

Hat Trick of Victories for Clive McGreal in Harrison 2 Bowl

This year’s winner of the Harrison 2 Bowl Trophy is Clive McGreal adding tohis 2 previous wins in this competition. This is billed as perhaps the most challenging event in the !at green calendar as it requires intense concentration from the outset with little opportunity to build a tactical head of bowls as is more commonplace in the sport of lawn bowls. This form of competition is considered a good barometer in identifying the bestlead bowler in any club. The early round robin matches produced some #ne performances with Anne Watterson showing good form before comingup against husband Phil who put an end to her hopes of progressing any further on the day. Similarly Club President, Eric Maddocks also started well hoping to add to his previous victories in the competition and all was going to plan until he came up against Bernice McGreal, in good form and fresh from her #ne display at the Dutch Open. The match was nip and tuckand went down to the wire with Bernice edging the tie by a single shot to remain undefeated in the pool phase to stake a place in the #nal. In the other half of the draw Phil Watterson was on track to claim the other #nal berth but failed to overcome the challenge of Clive McGreal who then progressed into the #nal by way of a superior shots advantage. The #nal itself provided some good entertainment for the members and spectators basking in the glorious sunshine of the late afternoon and after some closely contested heads Clive seized the opportunity as a few uncharacteristic loose bowls from Bernice gave him the chance to gain control on his way to lifting the trophy for a third time. The Club would liketo record its thanks to the new Onchan Park green keeper, Michael Jackson and Onchan Commissioners for their efforts and #ne playing surface of the green at this stage in the season.

Manx Bowlers Bloom in Holland

Manx bowlers recently returned from the World Bowls event having competed in the 3rd International Dutch Open staged at the Haarlem Bowls Club just a few miles outside Amsterdam. They resume their domestic leagues this week having recorded a much improved performance at this event compared with their first outing back in 2014. The ladies pairing of Pam Makin and Bernice McGreal representing the Island were in sparkling form from the outset as they notched up impressive victories against Argentina and a very strong duo from Ireland. The Manx ladies also led England for much of the match in a very closely contested affair which eventually ended in a draw unfortunately leaving both sides in joint fifth position just outside the playoff places. Moyers & McGreal Triumph in Season Opening Competition

On Saturday 23rd April there was a mixture of sun and wind for the first club competition of the 2016 season, the Yardstick. An exciting format which gives one point for any bowl one yard away from the jack at the end of each end, and an additional point for each 'toucher'. There was a great turnout from club members, a large number of the club's membership entering this event which. It saw randomly picked pairs and a triple all try to rack up as many points as possible. The team with the highest accumulation at the end of the day and all matches played won. It was a closely fought contest with only 4 points separating the top four teams. However, it was the pairing of Clive McGreal and Mike Moyer who took the honours and the trophy.
