LAWN BOWLS ISLE OF MAN
The recent heat waves on the island made conditions for this year’s Ruby Cup almost perfect! Blistering sun shine, a rock hard, shortly cut, quick sufrace and a healthy turnout. There’s not much more you could ask for. This year’s Ruby Cup open competition even attracted some visiting bowlers from the Algarve.
It was the formidable pairing of Eric Maddocks and Clive McGreal that managed an unblemished afternoon to regain the trophy after losing in last season’s final. Quality bowls came from all entrants, and the standard of competition was high, again showing the developments the sport and bowlers have made in the past couple of seasons. Pairs were split into two pools of five, each playing four games. The top pairing in each pool progressed to the final. It was a tough contest with many close matches across both pools. However, it was Marcia Pearson and Mike Moyer who topped Pool A with Eric and Clive topping Pool B, who clashed in the final. Despite a determined effort and some good bowls by both Marcia and Mike they could not topple Eric and Clive who regained the Ruby Cup. The Ruby Cup was introduced in 2017 to celebrate the club’s 40th anniversary, and to date Eric and CLive have claimed it in 4 out of 5 years its been played for.
